Philosophy
In 1987, we made our first vintage of a wine styled after the famous First Growth producers of
Bordeaux, created with the same uncompromising care as the Grands Vins of those venerable
chateaux. For more than 30 vintages, ISOSCELES has been our flagship wine and quality
benchmark for this style of wine here on the Central Coast of California. A blend based on
Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2019 ISOSCELES shows
why Paso Robles is such a great place to grow these varieties. Full-bodied, with ripe black fruit,
complex barrel spice and amazingly ready to drink right out of the gate, you can try a bottle or
two now, but make sure to save a few to enjoy this wine as it continues to evolve after some
time in the cellar.
Vintage Notes
2019 started with a cool winter with normal precipitation, breaking the dry trend of the previous
six years. Spring was wet and cool with bud break coming a few weeks later than usual.
Flowering progressed normally with minimal shatter occurring in a few blocks. June was dry with
the first real warming trend beginning toward the end of the month. July started warm, showing
the typical Paso Robles pattern of hot days and cold nights, but cooler weather toward the end
of the month delayed veraison by a few weeks. Mid-August warmed again and stayed that way
through early September with the usual Paso cold Fall nights helping to keep our acidity levels
high. Our cabernet, cabernet franc and merlot parcels for this wine were harvested starting late
September through late October as each parcel came into perfect balance for ripeness and
maturity.
Vinification
Fermentation: Stainless steel open and closed top tanks with twice daily pump overs
Maturation: Barrel aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak
Tasting Notes by Jason Santos, JUSTIN Winery Sommelier
Appearance: Bright with a deep purple core and a purple-ruby rim with moderate, deeply
stained tears on the glass.
Aroma: Black cherry, black currant and plum with leather, cigar box, and dried sage, vanilla
bean, dried violet, oak and a bit of camphor.
Palate: Full-bodied with ripe complex black cherry, boysenberry, cassis, and blackberry fruit on
the entry with baking spice. Dusty tannins appear on the mid-palate with cedar, dried tobacco
leaf, and saddle leather as it progresses. The finish is long, fresh and balanced with notes of
bay leaf, dried red rose petal, oak and sustained tannins. The 2019 ISOSCELES is a bold wine
with ripe fruit and attractive savory elements, which balance each other perfectly. This wine is
rich and complex enough to be enjoyed on its own but is a perfect match with a classic herb
crusted prime rib with traditional sides.
